Cardiovascular disease - Vital Hormone Clinic

What is cardiovascular disease?

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a class of diseases that involve the heart or blood vessels. It is a leading cause of death worldwide. The most common types of cardiovascular disease are coronary artery disease, heart failure, and stroke.

Coronary artery disease occurs when the arteries that supply blood to the heart become narrowed or blocked, which can cause chest pain (angina) and heart attacks. This is usually caused by a buildup of plaque in the arteries, a condition known as atherosclerosis. Risk factors include smoking, obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Heart failure means the heart can't pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. It develops over time as the heart's pumping becomes less efficient. Common causes are coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, and diseases that damage the heart. Symptoms include shortness of breath, swelling, and fatigue. Treatments aim to improve quality of life.

A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted, causing brain cells to die. It is usually caused by a blocked artery or a burst blood vessel. Symptoms depend on the part of the brain affected but can include numbness, weakness, vision loss, confusion, and trouble speaking. Stroke requires emergency treatment.

There are many ways to help prevent cardiovascular disease:

Early detection is key. See your doctor regularly to check your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar. Take prescribed medications as directed. Know the warning signs of heart attack and stroke and call 911 right away if they occur.

Small lifestyle changes can make a big difference in heart health. Walk for 30 minutes a day, cut back on salt and processed foods, and find healthy ways to manage stress. It is never too late to improve your cardiovascular health!
